I'm not going to lie… completing this color mixing chart is an adventure that once embarked upon… might drive you to the brink of despair. But at the end, a jewel box of color awaits you! There are hundreds of little tiny empty rectangles- each demanding a unique color combination. So, prepare to buckle your swash, wield your paintbrush, and march forth onto a technicolor battle field. Simply put, this exercise is not for the artistically faint of heart.

On the other hand. Perhaps you will find it a soothing pastime? (I admit to having felt peaceful, enraged, deranged, and damn inspired at various times as I worked on my chart. A spectrum of both emotion AND color- talk about bang for your buck!)

A color mixing chart that you paint yourself can be a great reference tool as you are painting later on, and also a nice way to keep track of which colors you have and what possibilities they offer. You do not have to have all of the colors in the G & B line for this to be a useful tool. You can just fill it out with the colors you have and it will still provide ample information about the mixing possibilities of your palette. (The picture below  shows the chart completed using only the 12 colors included in the Adventure Set.) You will also learn a great deal about your colors as you fill it out.

I chose to grade each box from a higher concentration of color to a lesser concentration going from left to right, just to make it that much more useful.

I used a red sable chisel (or bright) brush 3/16" wide to complete my chart.

This color chart is designed for standard 8.5" x 11" paper.

I have had good results using Arches 90 lb. Cold Press Watercolor Paper in my printer for this chart. I simply cut it to size and load it into my printer. Make sure to print on a Black & White setting and not color. Using Epson inks on this paper, I have had no trouble with printer ink running. (I use an Epson Workforce inkjet printer.)
