Pyrrole Red
~Full Pan~
Greenleaf & Blueberry Artisanal Handmade Watercolors

Color Name: Pyrrole Red
Pigment: Pyrrole Red
Pigment Index No.: PR254

Description: A bright, fiery red.  Dilutes to a rosy pink.  Intense tinting strength, fine particle side, moderate dispersion and value range, rather opaque and staining.

Like our Quinacridone Magenta, Quinoxalinedione Yellow, and Phthalocyanine Blue and Green, Pyrrole Red is a synthetic organic hybrid, which means they are synthetic single pigments bound to a natural mineral base.  As a result they will have behavior characteristics in common with both synthetic and natural pigments.  These won't handle the same as synthetic colors from other paint lines.

What is Pyrrole?  It does not occur naturally in nature, and was first discovered in the 1830's, and finally isolated in the 1850's.  It is a heterocyclic aromatic organic compound, which refers to its molecular structure, which contains a ring of atoms of at least two different elements.  Pyrrole pigments were developed by the automotive industry due to their great resistance to photodegredation (they are very lightfast).

As specialists in natural pigments, why on earth are we offering this color?  We are very intentional when we stray from natural and historical pigments.  While Cinnabar (natural Vermillion) is an extraordinarily beautiful color, it is highly toxic (mercuric sulphide).  We prefer not to work with it in our studios, but it leaves a hole in our palette.  Where the pigment that nature offers is unsuitable (too toxic, unstable, too rare), we turn, with much thought, to modern alternatives.

We work with standard plastic Full Pans.  These are durable and lightweight as well, and fit into most commercial travel watercolor boxes.
Our Full Pans measure: 3cm x 1.9cm x 1cm

Full Pans can be thought of as the portable equivalent to a tube of watercolor paint.  They are twice the size of a Half-Pan and hold a whole lot of color.  This size is a great choice for artists who enjoy working large.  Not only does this size pan hold more paint, it also has a greater surface area which can accommodate much larger brushes.  This size is also a wonderful way to carry your favorite colors.  If you have used up a Half-Pan and wish to replenish a palette staple, a Full Pan can be a nice next-step.  Palettes of Full Pans also make excellent flexible studio palettes; they are large enough to be used in a home studio or table-top set-up while allowing you to close up the set and take it on the road.

Further information about our watercolor paints is available here.

Please be aware that every monitor and screen displays colors a little differently.  We have done our very best to show our colors as they appear in your hand.

**Please Note**: These colors are NOT intended for children. Half-Pans are small and therefore a choking hazard. Please use only as intended.
