I generally avoid plastic where I can, but for traveling light it is often the best solution. For years I carried a little single-hole sharpener that didn't contain the shavings, and it was always a mess. This sharpener won't hold a lot of shavings, but the fact that it will hold some makes a travel kit so much cleaner. It will also accommodate the thicker Caran d'Ache pencils.
