Pans & Shells
Half-Pans
We work with standard white plastic Half-Pans. They are therefore durable and lightweight. They also fit into most metal bijoux boxes and watercolor travel boxes.
Our Half-Pans measure: 2cm x 1.7cm x 1cm
Half-Pans are a great choice for artists who are going for a minimalist approach and tend to seek all of their supplies in tiny lightweight versions and for artists who love to carry as many colors as possible while still managing space and weight. They are also a nice way to try out a color that is new to you.
Full Pans
We also work with standard plastic Full Pans. These are durable and lightweight as well, and fit into most commercial travel watercolor boxes.
Our Full Pans measure: 3cm x 1.9cm x 1cm
Full Pans can be thought of as the portable equivalent to a tube of watercolor paint. They are twice the size of a Half-Pan and hold a whole lot of color. This size is a great choice for artists who enjoy working large. Not only does this size pan hold more paint, it also has a greater surface area which can accommodate much larger brushes. This size is also a wonderful way to carry your favorite colors. If you have used up a Half-Pan and wish to replenish a palette staple, a Full Pan can be a nice next-step. Palettes of Full Pans also make excellent flexible studio palettes; they are large enough to be used in a home studio or table-top set-up while allowing you to close up the set and take it on the road.
Shells
For our Shell Pans, we use natural seashells, nature's answer to the pan. They are lightweight and durable, though have a greater chance of chipping if used roughly.
Our Shells, being a product of nature, vary in size, but usually measure between 2-3cm
Our Shells are roughly equivalent to 1/5th or 1/4th of a Half-Pan, depending on color. This is a traditional and historical method of storing color. Cave artists and medieval manuscript illuminators alike chose to store their paints in shells. Our Shells are small enough to help even the most extreme minimalist justify carrying along a dab of color. Another reason that we developed this option is as a way for you to sample our more rare and expensive colors in a more affordable format.
