Artisanal Handmade Watercolors
We produce artisanal handmade watercolors in small batches using traditional methods and the highest quality ingredients. Each color is crafted to allow the unique qualities of the pigment to shine. Our paints are for artists, travelers, dreamers, and doers. They are for people looking for something different, people who are inspired by natural materials, curious people who want to go exploring - be it in the mountains, in your own garden, or the pages of a new sketchbook.
Our paints are designed for adventure - whatever your definition of that may be.

-Artist & Chemist Formulated
Each of our colors is a single pigment paint. No mixtures means no surprises. The pigment is bound in natural highest-grade gum arabic which we process ourselves from the raw form. We use local organic honey in our formulation to prevent cracking and overly hard paint, and to improve re-wetting. A very small amount of natural preservative is added to prevent mold growth and deter insect interest in the delicious honey. We do not add ox gall or any other dispersants, brighteners, or fillers to the paint, as we believe those are decisions that must be left to the artist. Keeping our colors as pure as possible helps to reveal the individual qualities each pigment naturally possesses. Each watercolor paint color that we produce is completely made by hand, the traditional way with muller and slab -never machine mixed or blended. Each color also has a unique recipe that we have developed and perfected over hundreds of test batches in our pursuit of creating beautiful single pigment portable watercolors that are a joy to use.
Visual information on handling for each color is provided above in the color chart above and the color characteristics chart below (view blog post on the subject here). There are two black lines of permanent ink; the first was applied to Arches 140 lb. coldpress watercolor paper before the paint to demonstrate opacity/transparency, the second ink line was applied over the paint for comparison to the first line. The white line demonstrates the lifting characteristics. The paint has been applied from its most concentrated at the left to least concentrated at the right.
Each pan is individually wrapped in a foil wrapper. The label is printed in black ink on high quality textured white paper. There is an original paint swatch of the color over the black and white oak leaf design on the top of the label. This is to give an immediate and exact idea of what the color is and its opacity/transparency, tinting strength, and granulation. (We have photographed everything in natural, indirect light. However, it is important to keep in mind that computer monitors can vary in color depictions.) The paint name, pigment index number (where applicable), and batch number are printed and handwritten on the sides and bottom of the pan wrapper.
The naked pan itself has the paint name and batch number written on the underside in green ink. This can be removed with rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab, if you so desire.
We use standard sized pans, which therefore fit into various metal bijoux boxes as well as Winsor & Newton boxes.
