Off The Edge Of The Map Set
Greenleaf & Blueberry Artisanal Handmade Watercolors
This palette is comprised of 8 magnetized Half-Pans of color enclosed in a medium sized travel tin, and accompanied by a hand-painted color chart.
This set contains natural pigments and synthetic pigments, a man-made natural pigments, two mineral pigments, and an ochre pigments. Each synthetic pigment is a different type of synthetic: Quin., Phthalo, and Ultra. Each type of pigment has completely different visual and handling characteristics. Some pigments will be more opaque and some more transparent. Some of large particle sizes and some are very fine. Some have low tinting strengths and others are very intense right out of the gate. Graphite has a natural shimmer while Ultramarine Blue is very matte. Vine Charcoal has an almost violent tendency to disperse making it difficult to rein in and control while Pipestone will go right where you put it.
Why assemble this collection of desperate colors to form such a gang of misfits? To explore loosening your control. To inject some creative play into your practice. One of the wonderful things about certain colors in watercolor is that you need only give them a push and they will do amazing things on their own.
So often color collections, and indeed entire paint lines, are built around homogeny of behavior. Which is fine! By assembling like colors (for example all Ochres) you can remove a lot of the guess-work and surprises from your paint and free you to think more about your composition. But there are discoveries and effects you will never give your work the opportunity of benefitting from by playing it safe.
Just mixing up the types of pigments in your palette will throw each into contrast with the other. An Ochre might all of a sudden seem exotic when contrasted with a Phthalo.
So, I've thrown all different kinds of pigments into this collection, but more of less kept a chromatic progression in tact so the hues still make a useable palette.
I hope you enjoy this one. I also hope it frustrates and unnerves you. When you feel those sensations when you're painting you know you're stretching and treading new territory.
